The Parker 51 Fountain Pen-Why All the Fuss Among Fountain Pen Lovers?
The Parker 51 fountain pen is considered by many to be a design classic and much sought after by collectors of fountain pens.
The Parker 51 was first produced in 1941 and the Aerometric ink filling mechanism was introduced in the late 1940s.
It stayed in production right up to the 1970s and boasted a hooded nib and multi finned ink collector.
So, how do you date a Parker 51 given that it has spanned the decades?
You will find that 1941 models have imitation jewels on the pen cap and barrel end. The vast majority of 1941 models had an engraving around the end of the cap barrel. If this is not present and there are 2 jewels as indicated already then it can be dated between 1942 and 1946.
The 1950s model can be identified by the different pens in the series such as the Dime, the 51 Special,the Flighter, Presidential, Signet etc.
1960s Parker 51s have brightly colored plastic barrels and caps and Parker 51s utilizing ink cartridges can be dated to the 1970s.
In 2002 Parker introduced the Parker 51 Special edition. This series of pens was a limited edition and featured 2 tone vermeil cap and an 18 karat gold hooded nib.
The filling edition in the Special Edition is a twist action refillable mechanism with a twin channelled ink feed.
The Parker Duofold Fountain Pen
One of the most popular pens in the Parker fountain pen range down through the years has been the Duofold. The Duofold was first introduced in the 1920s and one of it's unique selling features was that it was made from an unbreakable Permanite which was a type of plastic made by DuPont for the Parker pen company.
The Duofold was the primary reason for Parker being catapulted into market leadership and into the hearts of Americans. One of the primary characteristics of the Duofold from an aesthetic viewpoint was that it was offered in bold two tone colors which was a new departure for fountain pen buyers.
Parker fountain pens are a real favorie amongst pen lovers all over the world because of their functionality, style and history. All top fountain pen collectors ensure that their collection includes a Parker Duofold pen at the very minimum.
