Running Horses

Jockey Moves are as Important as Trainer Moves in Horse Racing Handicapping
For every jockey at any race track there are many more trainers. To put that another way, there are a lot more trainers running horses at most race tracks than there are jockeys. While it is good to learn the methods and tactics of some of the big trainers, trying to learn them all, especially for the conditioners who only have a horse or two, is time consuming and difficult.
On the other hand, there may only be about a dozen jockeys who regularly ride at your favorite track. It makes a lot of sense to become familiar with their tactics and what happens when one of them changes mounts. Unless you know the trainer or owner of the horse, you may not know if it was the jockey or jockey agent who made the decision o abandon a mount, but watching what happens will help you to understand what is going on.
Many successful riders have an agent who gets them on the best horses possible. They are excellent judges of horseflesh. They also know which trainers are successful and which ones may be going through a rough time. Like trainers who have their own habits and who repeat a move time and again, agents and riders have their own habits, too.
For instance, you may see that a jockey was on a maiden horse and rode it for two races without a win. The horse seems to be improving but the rider switches to a first time starter in the same race. What happened? It may be that the rider has a two race rule. He or she won't stick with a maiden horse that seems doomed to gradually improve while it competes over and over again in the non winners ranks.
You may also find that the opposite is true. Some riders will stick with a young horse until they get a win. Knowing which kind of rider you are dealing with will help you to understand a horse's chances of winning when a rider switches. Many people see a top reins man get off a horse and think it automatically means the horse has no chance of winning. I've seen this happen many times and then the animal does win.
The jockey who abandoned the horse may have thought he or she was getting onto a better one or may have had a contract with the owner of the other horse and had to take the mount. Knowing which jockeys have a contract and must ride for another trainer will help you to understand their moves.
Like I often say, a change of rider is the biggest equipment change in racing, after gelding that is.

If Thoroughbred race horses love running so much, why is it necessary to go to the whip to force them to run ?
My husband & I feel a nationwide campaign should be started to ban going to the whip with a racing horse.
The whip is an extension of the rider's hands and legs. It's used to encourage the horse to keep moving forward as many will start "loafing " once they get to the front or alongside another horse. It's also used to keep the horse from moving sideways into another horse or to and from the rail. A lot of horses drift sideways at the top of a stretch run, causing them to lose ground. A flick of the whip pushes them back into a straight path. The horses are also trained to switch leads (Which is running with one front leg extended further for balance, left thru turns, right on straightaways) which helps them use both sides of their bodies in a more equal manner. A flick reminds them to change their leads so they don't become too fatigued on one side. Some horses don't need reminders. Most do. Their skin is pretty thick and a few swats with all that adrenaline pumping is no big deal. And if you overdue it on any horse they will "sour up" and stop working .So no, they are not being beaten.Mostly they are just being brushed or tapped
